At Villanova, this is truly 'madness'

Let the Madness begin.

We’re not talking about New Orleans, baring one's breasts for beads, or some other Mardi Gras debauchery.

We’re talking about college hoops.

On the Main Line, the “madness” is no doubt a tad more maddening this year.

That’s because the Villanova Wildcats, at one point ranked No. 5 in the nation, are in freefall.

Their timing is not the best.

The ‘Cats head into Big East first-round play tonight at Madison Square Garden against South Florida having lost nine of their last 14. A quick scan of the Top 25 college basketball teams in the nation this week will not turn up the proud Villanova name. They're Temple back at No. 24, but no Villanova. That’s how far they’ve fallen.

It’s unlikely Villanova will fall against the No. 15 seed Bulls, but then again a few weeks ago not many would have envisioned Villanova being forced to play a first-round game.

A loss to South Florida would be anathema, and throw their seemingly assured spot in the NCAA Tournament into jeopardy.

Villanova on the bubble? Probably not. Unless they fail to get the job done tonight.

Madness indeed.
