Brown-out for Phils

So much for the great Phillies right-field competition.

One-time wunderkind Domonic Brown, who adjusted his batting stance and then proceeded to struggle all spring, is now on the shelf. Brown suffered a broken bone in his hand on Saturday and may need surgery. He’s back in Philadelphia today for further examination.

In the meantime, the job looks like it now belongs to Ben Francisco, who has been red-hot so far in Clearwater. John Mayberry also is making a push for some playing time.

It was not a good weekend on the health front for the Phils, with word that second baseman Chase Utley got a cortisone shot in his ailing right knee in an attempt to ease persistent pain. Utley has not yet gotten on the field this spring.

On the upside, the Phils’ starting rotation looks every bit as good as advertised.

Yesterday it was Cliff Lee’s turn to sparkle, throwing four strong innings.

Even Kyle Kendrick got into the act, looking good as the starter in a split-squad game.

Brown will be gone anywhere from three to six weeks. When he comes back, he likely will start the season in the Lehigh Valley. It will be up to Francisco to provide a strong right-handed bat behind Ryan Howard, who is starting to show some signs of life of his own in Florida.
