In the NFL, money talks

The NFL owners and Players Union have decided to play overtime.

With their collective bargaining agreement due to expire last night at midnight, the two groups blinked and agreed to a 24-hour extension.

What happens today is anyone’s guess.

Here’s one thing that won’t happen. The fans won’t be asked if they’d like a seat at the table.

Remember that the next time Jeff Lurie asks you to dig a little deeper for those tickets. Or the next time one of the kids wants that “must-have” new Eagles jersey.

During the meltdown of the financial industry that brought the nation’s economy to its knees, we heard often that many of the offending firms that were now going hat in hand to the federal government begging for a bailout were “too big to fail.”

You might say the same thing about the NFL.

There’s just too much money involved for either the billionaire owners or millionaire players to walk away from the gravy train.

That does not mean there won’t be a lockout. There very well could be. It could KO some mini-camps and even drag out into training camp this summer. But I wouldn’t take any action on any real games being missed.

Too much money is at stake.

And as we all know, money talks, everything else walks.

Except the Eagles. They don’t walk, or run. They only throw the ball.
