More bad news for the archdiocese

This was probably not exactly the kind of news that the Archdiocese of Philadelphia needed this week.

Battered by several weeks of bad publicity stemming from criminal charges filed against several priests and a former priest on sex abuse charges, and rocked by charges filed for the first time against a high-ranking official for endangering the welfare of children, the church yesterday delivered more bad news.

This time, it did not exactly come as a surprise.

More Catholic schools are being closed.

The archdiocese announced it would shutter seven schools, most of them in Philadelphia and a couple of Bucks County.

Luckily, Delaware County is being spared the ax.

It was just last week that the folks out at Our Lady of Charity in Brookhaven learned their beloved parish school was getting a reprieve, and in fact would remain open for at least one more year.

No so for the following schools:

Ascension of Our Lord Parish School in the Kensington section of Philadelphia;

• Our Lady of Fatima Parish School, Bensalem, Bucks County;

• Saint Anne Parish School in the Kensington section of Philadelphia;

• Saint Cyprian Parish School in the Cobbs Creek section of Philadelphia;

• Saint Hugh of Cluny Parish School in the Fairhill section of Philadelphia;

• Saint Martin of Tours Parish School in New Hope, Bucks County; and

• Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish School in Croydon, Bucks County.

All of them will close at the end of the school year. It's the same villain; enrollment is down, costs continue to go up.

The archdiocese must be wondering what else can go wrong.
