I was kind of wondering how Cole Hamels was going to react as he headed to the hill for the Phils last night.
It didn’t take long to find out. I actually have picked Hamels to be the National League Cy Young Award winner. He’s likely going to be matched up against the other team’s No. 4 starter most of the year.
It was just a few years ago that Hamels put this team on his Southern California cool back and carried them through the playoffs and to a World Series win.
That was before Cliff Lee. And Roy Halladay. And Roy Oswalt. And Cliff Lee again.
Now Hamels is almost the forgotten “ace” in the Phils Phab Phour. There was no place for the left-hander to hide last night.
I was wondering if Hamels was going to be feeling the pressure last night after the Phils got three straight excellent efforts from Halladay, Lee and Oswalt.
To say Hamels was not sharp is to say it was a little chilly last night at Citizens Bank Park.
Hamels did not get out of the third inning, when he surrendered six runs on seven hits, including the ignominy of surrendering two hits to opposing pitcher Chris Young in that disastrous third inning.
Hamels left the game to a rousing Bronx cheer. Might be a little early for that, but it goes with the territory.
The Phils’ other forgotten man, Joe Blanton, their No. 5 starter, will get the call tonight. It’s a pretty safe bet he’ll be better than Hamels was last night.
Not a good night in general for the home folks, as the Sixers and Flyers completed a Philly trifecta, with losses to the Celtics and Senators respectively.
