Drawing a line in the sand

Maybe Chester is turning a corner when it comes to crime.

Something very interesting happened on Sunday, something law enforcement authorities have been pleading for now for years. Unfortunately the message too often has fallen on deaf ears.

Not this time.

Police got a tip call alerting them that the man wanted in connection with a brutal rape and robbery inside a South Philly coffee shop was spotted in Chester.

Christopher Reeves, 32, was captured by police after a brief foot chase. But it might not have happened if police had not gotten some help.

Chester Police Chief Darren Alston credited the resident who recognized Reeves and contacted police.

“We wouldn’t have apprehended him if it weren’t for that caller,” Alston said.

This is an important development, especially in a city like Chester, where police often do battle with the street code of “no snitching.”

Maybe citizens are ready to draw a line in the sand and take back their streets.

If so, it’s a landmark for the city, and an example for other citizens in other trouble spots to do the same.
