That ticking sound you hear is the click winding down to the day the county SPCA will get out of the animal control business.
That would be July 1. In the meantime, the county and municipalities are trying furiously to come up with an alternative.
A new grassroots group is expected to appear at County Council’s regular weekly meeting this morning to offer their ideas. We’ll let you know what they have to say. DAWG, the Delaware Animal Welfare Group, is not specifically aligned with the SPCA, but they do seem to support their position.
Yesterday, County Councilman Mario Civera met once again with groups seeking a solution. You can read about it here.
One thing we learned yesterday is that state law does not hold the county responsible for animal control. Instead it assigns that duty to the state, the local municipality, or the state police.
One thing that both Civera, local officials and a lot of animal control advocates would like to see is for the SPCA to offer a one-year extension on their decision to get out of the animal control business.
But the SPCA does not seem inclined to do that.
In the meantime, the clock keeps ticking.
Which is another reason I see somebody, maybe the state, going into court to seek an injunction that would block the move by the SPCA.
Stay tuned.
