Gov. Tom Corbett is coming to Chester today. That’s a good thing.
The governor, who just completed his first 100 days in office, will visit the Chester Community Charter School. It’s part of what Corbett says is an ongoing review of the effectiveness of both public and charter schools across the Commonwealth.
But make no mistake. Corbett is a proponent of charter schools, and legislation that would give vouchers to some parents, allowing them to send their kids to schools like Chester Community Charter.
I wish the governor would make a few other stops on his tour.
Maybe he could stop by schools in Chichester, William Penn And Upper Darby. As we’ve seen in the past week of so, school board members there are looking at some serious cuts. They are proposing a varying mix of job cuts, program reductions and tax hikes to make up for gaping deficits, a problem only exacerbated by state funding cuts included in Corbett’s budget plan.
Giving vouchers to parents in some of the those districts is only going to make the problem worse for public school districts that are already up to their necks in red ink.
