Nirvana for Philly fans

If there is a better time to be a Philly sports fan, I can’t think of it.

Roy Halladay went the distance last night in a 3-2 win over the Nats, and striking out the side after surrendering two runs in the ninth to preserve the win. Halladay’s mark now stands at 2-0. His only glitch was that no-decision on opening day.

In the process he preserved a rare feat the Phillies have going . They are one of just a couple of teams this season that has yet to lose two games in a row.

How many long losing streaks do you think this team is going to suffer through with this starting pitching staff? Yeah, thought so.

It’s also time to get Flyer-ed up as the orange and black head into another Stanley Cup run tonight with a first-round series vs. the Sabres.

I’d like to throw out a big thank-you to winger Danny Briere, who joined us for our 'Live From the Newsroom' Internet show last night during which we previewed the Flyers opening round.

I was the lone dissenter in the group. Beat writer Anthony SanFilippo, columnist Jack McCaffery and staff writer Bob Grotz all picked the Flyers. I like them, too, but I don’t think the series will be nearly that easy. I say at least six games.

I still wonder exactly who the Flyers’ No. 1 goaltender is, and just how quickly Peter Laviolette will bring out the hook should rookie Sergei Bobrovsky struggle tonight.

Then there’s the Sixers. The good news is that they are in the playoffs, facing Miami in a first-round match that opens Saturday. The bad news is that they are limping in to the playoffs. They lost again last night, in the process missing out on the chance to finish with a winning record.
Instead they wound up a dead even 41-41.

The Sixers lost five of their last six. Injuries had a lot to do with that. Lou Williams has been on the shelf. He’s the key to their bench rotation. Andre Iguodala has a balky knee. Elton Brand has a banged-up hand.

Even worse news is that in the playoffs the NBA is a half-court game, and that’s not their strength. Their running game likely will be blunted.

This does not bode well for the Sixers. It says here they’re lucky to win a game and knocked out of the playoffs by Miami in five.

Then there’s the Eagles. This time of year the talk radio lines are usually blazing with NFL Draft talk. Not this year. The NFL remains in limbo with the players locked out by the owners.

Not even the potential trade of Kevin Kolb can breathe life into the Eagles.

And why do I get the impression that the folks who rule over Nova Care nation are beside themselves at all the attention being heaped on the other three teams in town.

The Eagles an afterthought. There’s something you don’t see every day.

Gold Standard? Not unless they get their labor woes behind them and start talking about football again.

In the meantime, the Eagles will be looking up at their three counterparts.
