Of Werth and Hamels

A few random thoughts from the world of sports as we prepare for our first 80-degree day of the spring. Brace yourself for a serious case of spring – make it summer – fever.

* I love the people who are chuckling now about Jayson Werth’s situation. Yep, the Nats are sitting at 4-5, 3 games behind the Phils.

So Phillies fans are wondering what Werth is thinking about his decision to leave the Phils now.

I think I know exactly what Werth is thinking: I SIGNED A CONTRACT FOR $100 MILLION.

The Phils are off today and will be in D.C. to get reacquainted with their former No. 5 hitter Tuesday night.

What’s Werth worth? A whole lot more than anyone in their right mind should have paid him. But I don’t hold it against him for a second. And I don’t think he regrets his decision for a second.

* Then there’s our love-hate relationship with Cole Hamels.

Interesting that while we are all in love with Cliff Lee, and in awe of Roy Halladay, Hamels has something neither of them possess.

That would be a World Series ring. How quickly we forget. Hamels put this team on his back and carried it to that world title back in 2008.

Now he gets booed when he has a bad outing.

I don’t get it.

Hamels was back on the hill yesterday after lasting less than three innings in his season debut last week. This was the Cole Hamels of 2008. The lefty blew away the Braves, shutting them out for seven innings.

Cliff Lee got hammered in the series opener in Atlanta Friday night. I wonder what the reaction would have been had he done that at Citizens Bank Park. I know what it would have been if Hamels had done it. We’ve already seen it.

This Phillies team is going to be scary good. They are getting solid pitching, along with very good hitting.

Just remember that Hamels is a big part of that, and he was here before any of these other guys.

* And now I suppose we can start the Michael Vick jokes. Police say they broke up a big dogfighting operation in South Philly over the weekend.

No, not even going to go there.
