Painting the town red

There’s a new gold standard in town.

This no doubt is going to raise the hackles on the necks of the folks down at NovaCare Nation who lord over the Eagles, and who firmly believe they also dominate the local sports landscape.

This just in. We are once again painting the town red – Phillies red, not green.

Not helping matters much for the Eagles brass is the fact that their sports is currently on the sidelines. And not just because they’re in the off-season. They may not have a “next” season due to the lockout resulting from the contract impasse between the players and owners.

In the meantime, the Phils are off to a 3-0 start, have the best starting pitching rotation in baseball, and play to a packed house every day.

It’s not just Citizens Bank Park that is racking up big numbers tied to the Phillies.

The team set a record on Sunday for the biggest TV audience they’ve ever drawn for a Sunday game on Channel 17.

Channel 17 put out a press release saying that Sunday’s game in which Roy Oswalt and Ryan Howard led the Phils to another big win posted big Nielsen numbers. The telecast drew a 14.8 household rating, and a 32.4 share.

Sunday’s game averaged a 14.8 household rating – the highest Phillies rating ever on PHL17. The record rating also scored big numbers in Adults 25-54 with an 8.7 (+43% over 2010 Sunday high) and Men 25-54 with an 11.4 (+34% over 2010 Sunday high).

One household rating point = 30,158 Homes in the Philadelphia area. A share represents the percentage of the available audience watching the station. In other words, on Sunday afternoon 32 percent of the TVs turned on in the region were tuned into the Phillies game.

When looking at household shares for Sunday’s game, PHL17 had a 32.4 share average for the broadcast, crushing the previous record by 7.5 share points.

In the meantime, the Eagles sit and wait for the NFL Draft, not even knowing if there will be a 2011 season, and also not knowing what exactly they are going to do with Kevin Kolb.

Maybe the Phils could have Banner and Lurie throw out a first pitch, just so we don’t forget them.
