Questions about Eagles pick

Here’s a scary thought.

Andy Reid believes his first-round draft choice, Danny Watkins of Baylor, could step in and start immediately.

Could?

He better be able to do more than that.

There are some other problems with this pick.

Watkins played left tackle in college, but is projecting as a guard in the pros. He’s 6-foot-3 and tips the scales at 310 pounds.

I’m not usually a fan of using first-round picks on offensive linemen, but Reid is correct that the Birds need help on the offensive line. I just don’t think they need it at guard.

I don’t think they need it at left tackle either. That’s usually the glamour spot for NFL linemen, protecting those multi-millionaire quarterbacks’ blind side.

But the Eagles have hitched their wagon to Michael Vick, who happens to be left-handed. That makes the most important position on the Eagles offensive line the right tackle.

Can you say Winston Justice?

Now what do you think of the pick of Danny Watkins. I wish him the best. Seems like a good guy.

I just don’t think he was necessarily what the Eagles needed.

Not with the 23rd pick in the draft.

To win, the Eagles need to keep Vick upright. They learned that at the end of last year, when Vick started to wear down from the beating and constant pressure he was taking, much of it coming around Justice’s right tackle spot.

I don’t see how taking Watkins helps them.
