A few sports thoughts to start your Wednesday morning, and doesn’t the thought of an 80-degree afternoon make skipping out of work and heading to that 1 p.m. Phillies afternoon special sound tempting?
Speaking of the Phillies, we hate to say we told you so, but we told you so.
On opening day, I spent eight innings during our special live Fancast from Jimmy Mac’s in Drexel Hill bemoaning the Phils’ lack of hitting, and that this was exactly what everyone had feared the entire time the Phils were in Florida. Of course, the Phils rallied in the bottom of the ninth and all was forgotten.
The Phils bats were electric in that first week of the season.
That was then, this is now.
Make no mistake, the Phils offensive woes are for real. They got shut out again last night, putting up just two hits against ex-mate Randy Wolf and the Brewers.
Forget hitting homers, or even extra base hits. This team suddenly is not even hitting the ball hard. Think they miss Chase Utley and Jayson Werth in the lineup. Utley is now sprinting in the outfield. Ironically, his replacement Wilson Valdez has been one of the offensive bright spots.
In the process, Roy Halladay also proved he’s human, getting rocked by the Brew Crew. The Phils lost a series for the first time this season, and will send Cliff Lee to the mound today in an attempt to avoid a sweep.

Then there’s the Sixers. The thinking here has gone from can they possibly upset the mighty Heat, to can they manage to win a game.
After dropping both games in Miami, including being absolutely blown out Monday night, they will be on their home floor Thursday. Don’t expect things to be much different.
Give Doug Collins credit for being honest, even if it wasn’t exactly what fans – and I am guessing management – wanted to hear. The Heat are a better team.

Then there’s this little Christmas present for Eagles fans. Don’t plan any big celebrations on Christmas Eve.
That’s because the Birds will be in Dallas for a 4:15 game with the hated Cowboys on Dec. 24. So much for that vigil Mass. Merry Christmas!
And for those of us with early wake-up calls, the NFL schedule-makers didn’t exactly do us any favors. The Birds are scheduled for no less than five prime time games on Sunday and Monday nights, starting in Week 2 on Sept. 18 in Atlanta.
The Eagles play exactly half their 16-game schedule at 1 p.m. Sunday. Everything else is either 4 o-clock or prime time.
Blame it on Michael Vick.
And pity the poor beat writers and newspaper editors trying to figure out how to get these games in under new, early deadlines.
