Tastykake is whistling Dixie

The rest of the country is about to find out what Philadelphia already knows.

Nobody bakes a cake as tasty as a Tastykake.

At least that’s the plan.

After fearing the worst for financially ailing Tasty Baking Co., the parent company of the local icon that has made Krimpets and Kandy Kakes a staple of Philly diets for decades, yesterday’s news that the company was being sold was probably the best-case scenario.

Tasty is being sold to Flowers Foods Inc., of Thomasville, Ga., the bakers behind Sunbeam bread and other brands, for $34 million. The Dixie firm also assumes the company’s large debt.

But Tastykakes are not going the way of Scott Paper, Horn & Hardart, John Wanamaker and Strawbridge’s, other icons of Philadelphia business that have passed into memory.

Instead Flowers Foods instead is vowing to take the regional brand and turn it into a national treat.

That means Tasty’s brand new plant at the Navy Yard in South Philly will not be shuttered. And the 766 jobs there are safe for now.

The key is Flowers’ plan to take the Tastykake brand national. It will be interesting to see the reaction of folks in the South, where they have been raised on Krispy Kreme, fried chicken and sweet tea, to a Yankee treat.

Just remember, nobody bakes a cake as tasty as a Tastykake, y’all.
