Feeling the heat in Chester

I know people are not going to believe this, but I get tired of reporting the kind of stories that grace the front page of today’s newspaper.

Yes, Chester is in the news again.

Summer is coming, and the city is already simmering.

Chester police are investigating two incidents – including another fatal shooting – that may be linked. And even more frightening, they are wondering if the shooting is part of a turf war among battling groups of young people.

It’s the same kind of scenario that unfolded a few weeks ago when 10 young people were shot during a party at a packed social hall in the township.

Right now no one is saying if the two fatal shootings are linked.

Police also are investigating whether Sunday night’s fatal shooting is linked to an arson fire that destroyed a city garage where a car that had been impounded was taken. The bullet-riddled car was found at Fourth and Concord streets shortly after the shooting. It was taken to Clayton's Auto Parts. Yesterday afternoon someone set the place on fire.

Luckily, no one was injured in the fire. But it could have been a disaster. Or an even greater disaster than the loss of life already suffered in the city.

Yes, summer is coming, and things are heating up in Chester.

City officials need to take whatever action is necessary to douse this fire. The city can’t afford any more senseless violence.
