The Flyers should take a page from the Phillies handbook.
Not, that doesn’t mean they should build a swanky, retro, fan-friendly new stadium.
Ed Snider already built his Shangri-la. It’s now called the Wells Fargo Center, or some other bank. It seems to change names every five minutes.
For years the Phillies would construct their lineup around offense, only to learn seemingly every year that pitching is what wins in the post-season.
For the Flyers, it’s goaltending.
I don’t know that he had much choice, but the three-ring circus that Flyers coach Peter Laviolette put on over the past month set a new low for a franchise that has consistently struggled to find a goaltender.
Every year Paul Holmgren tinkers with his lineup, adding valuable pieces such as Chris Pronger. And every year the Flyers lose because of the same problem, instability in goal.
That should be Priority One for this off-season. Find a top-of-the-line goaltender. Use promising rookie Sergei Bobrovsky as the backup.
Holmgren might have to part with captain Mike Richards or star winger Jeff Carter to land the right guy. That’s a price he’ll just have to pay.
This team hasn’t had a real solution in goal since Ron Hextall was patrolling the area between the pipes.
It’s probably not a coincidence that the team has not won a Stanley Cup in the span either.
