Tough lessons for archdiocesan schools

The hits just keep coming for archdiocesan schools here in Delaware County.

Yesterday it was bad news being delivered to parents at Our Lady of Charity in Brookhaven and St. Philomena in Lansdowne. Their parish schools are closing.

Today it looks like St. Kevin’s in Springfield might be in line for simiilar news.

A meeting has been called for tonight at the school. Parents fully expect the worst, that their beloved school will close its doors forever after 54 years of Catholic elementary education.

You can read the full story here.

And our editorial on the school closings here.

And even that might not be the end of it. There are rumblings that more closings could be in the works.

Like I said, the hits just keep coming.

Parents are considering a rally at St. Kevin's at the end of classes today before tonight’s meeting.

We obviously will be there to cover the story. Keep checking back on DelcoTimes.com for updates.

Not only that, but become part of our story. E-mail editor@delcotimes.com if you’d like your voice heard. Post a comment on our story, or on this blog. We will use some of them in print tomorrow.

That’s part of what our new journalistic mission. Yes, we will cover the story as we always have. But you also now have the power to join us in this endeavor. You are part of what is now being referred to as “The Crowd.” It’s something we are increasingly looking to harness as we cover a story.

You might know more than we do. You might be able to point out a problem with a story, maybe some information that is not complete. Or you might have information we could use.

Don’t sit on the sidelines. Get involved. Join us in covering the news that is crucial to your communities.

And in the world of archdiocesan education in Delaware County, that news these days is not good.

We pray through the Intercession of Saint John Neumann that Saint Kevin School will be saved and we pray for the protection of all parochial schools. Please join us as supporters of Catholic Education as we come together in a candlelight vigil this Sunday demonstrating our faith in Catholic Education and our schools.
