Engaging the community, improving our coverage

It’s amazing what a little community engagement can do.

You might remember that last weekend we had a pretty big story. I’m not surprised.

We always seem to have big stories occur on holidays. I can assure you I don’t plan them that way.

Holidays are for the most part a huge headache for newspaper editors. For one, our small staff is taxed that much more. We have to produce content for a day’s paper without really having the full staff on board to do it.

Add into that a huge story, like the standoff and fatal shooting in Trainer on July 4, and you have problems.

Which is one of the reason I again turned to a little community engagement to help our coverage.

I explain why in today’s print column.
