Chester mayor in tough spot

I genuinely like Wendell Butler. He strikes me as a nice man who is saddled with a gargantuan task, that being mayor of Chester.

Under Butler the city has turned a corner after decades of decline and is now enjoying something of an economic renaissance.

But I’m still confounded by the mayor’s actions in the wake of the fatal shooting of a suspect by a city police officer.

On Friday Butler indicated he would seek the officer’s suspension. But on Saturday, the mayor was backing off, in particular after two Facebook pages sprouted, one urging support for Chester law enforcement, another directly seeking the mayor’s impeachment.

Butler, a longtime city officer and a former police chief in Chester, should have known better.

Here’s our editorial on the situation.
