Comeback Kids? Phils are Road Warriors

You kind of figured the Phils were due for a clunker.

They were playing the last game on a 10-game West Coast road trip. It was an afternoon game; you could hardly blame the Phils if their heads were already on the plane waiting to whisk them back to Philly after the game.

That scenario seemed cemented in the first inning when the Dodgers jumped on starter Vance Worley for five quick runs. It was a rare hiccup for the Phils rookie, who has been lights out since assuming the No. 5 spot in the rotation.

The Dodgers added another run and were sitting pretty with a 6-0 lead. You figure the Phils go quietly and hustle to the airport.

Not this team.

The Phillies had gone an incredible 8-1 on the road trip. But they wanted one more. And so they started slowly chipping away at the lead. New addition Hunter Pence got the ball rolling with a bomb to dead center field.

Chase Utley tied the game at 7 in the sixth, setting the stage for slugger Ryan Howard to mash a pitch the other way, tucking it into the seats in left to propel the Phils to a 9-7 lead.

Ryan Madson got the save, despite giving up a run.

Phils 9, Dodgers 8.

The sweep gave the Phils a 9-1 mark on the trip, the best record in franchise history for a 10-game road trip.

They now stand at 77-40, 37 games over .500.

Comeback Kids? How about Road Warriors.

Bring on Red October.
