First things first: No one got hurt. In particular Michael Vick.
The Eagles QB sparkled in his one series as the Birds kicked off their exhibition season last night with a win over the Baltimore Ravens. Vick looked in mid-season form as he marched the offense down the field and fired a short strike to tight end Brent Celek to cash in the TD. He then made a quick exit, instead of finishing the rest of the first quarter. Good call. He is the one guy the Eagles cannot lose, and his susceptibility to injury makes exposing him in these glorified practices.
I'm not a big fan of the preseason, but I always go on one maxim: At one point, you want both the starting offense and defense to look sharp. The Eagles accomplished both last night. And I think I know why.
It is their two most important off-season acquisitions. That would be defensive line coach JIm Washburn and offensive line guru Howard Mudd. Both have installed new systems and Washburn's scheme in particular seemed to be paying results with constant pressure from the Eagles' offensive line.
One other thought: Anyone remember David Akers? His replacement, Chris Henery, looked good as gold in nailing two kicks and constantly burying kickoffs in the end zone, albeit from the 35.
The Eagles goal for the rest of the preseason now should be simple. Stay healthy, and that includes getting starting wide receiver Jeremy Maclin on the field.
