LIfe without J-Roll

So that’s what the Phillies might look like without Jimmy Rollins.

It wasn’t pretty.

With Kyle Kendrick on the mound and a runner already on first base in the top of the first, the Phils’ right-hander got a tailor-made double-play ground to shortstop.

Only one problem. J-Roll wasn’t there with his slick glove. He went on the DL with a sore groin and won’t be seen again until after Labor Day. Instead we’ve got Michael Martinez.

Martinez promptly booted the ball, opening the flood gates to what wound up being a big inning for the Mets and the Phils staring at a 4-0 deficit before most of the afternoon crowd was in their seats.

Phils’ pitchers have excelled recently in gettting out of these kinds of jams. Not Kyle Kendrick.

Rollins and the Phillies are likely headed for some difficult discussions as the All-Star shortstop likely wants one more big payday. But the Phillies will have to weigh just how much they want to invest in Rollins, whose legs are giving him increasing problems.

Problem is, they don’t really have anyone to replace him in the crucial position.

Speaking of crucial positions, that would include middle linebacker on most football teams.

Then again, there’s the Eagles, who never seem to put a lot of stock in their linebacking corps.

This year looks to be no exception. The Birds are again taking a huge roll of the dice in making rookie Casey Matthews their starting middle linebacker.

Keep an eye on Matthews in tonight’s key third preseason game vs. the Browns. He’s struggled so far this exhibition season. He needs to make a statement tonight.

If he doesn’t, the Birds might be forced to start scanning the waiver wires for a veteran to come in and solidify what looks like a weak point on the defense.
