The New York Mess

Just call them the New York Mess.

Don’t get me wrong, I dislike the New Yorkers as much as anyone. But this edition of the Gothams is just sad.

For the second straight night, the Mets were dismantled by the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. The final was 9-4. At one point it was 9-0. And it wasn't that close. This comes on the heels of a 10-0 spanking the Phils laid on them Monday night.

Earthquake? For Mets fans, this is probably more like the plague. What’s next? Locusts?

The Mets loaded the bases in the first inning against young Phillies starter Vance Worley. And didn’t score.

In the second they put their first two batters on second and third. And didn’t score.

Then, as has been happening all too frequently to them, the roof caved in. And it had nothing to do with an earthquake. John Mayberry Jr. and Shane Victorino led an assault by the Phils, who were playing without Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Raul Ibanez and Carlos Ruiz. They didn't need them.

The Mets are just a lousy team. More than that, they look like a team that could care less that they are being embarrassed on a nightly basis.

The team may not care, but their fans probably still do. There was a marked absence of the usual band of New Yorkers making the trip south to make their presence known at Citizens Bank Park.

Maybe they’ve given up on their team. If so, that would give them something in common with most of the players.
