Labor Day greetings from Sunoco boss

That was quite the little Labor Day greeting Sunoco boss Lynn Elsenhans delivered to workers on Tuesday.

The day after we pause to honor labor, the Sunoco CEO told workers at the Marcus Hook and Philadelphia refineries they likely would soon be working for someone else – or not at all.

You can read all the details here.

And you can check out columnist Gil Spencer’s opinion here.

The bottom line is that Sunoco does not make money – or at least not enough money – on refining these days.

So Elsehans is simply continuing her merciless look at the bottom line and slashing costs.

In this case that likely will cost a ton of jobs in Marcus Hook. Unless, of course, another company wants to give refining a shot.

If I was one of those workers, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

If there's one thing we don't need it's excess refining capacity driving down the margins on gasoline. Why refine $3/gal gas when you can sell $4/gas? And the Labor day goodbye present to the unions...priceless. Well played Sunoco!
