The Michael Vick Experience

While we’re waiting for the Phillies to clinch a playoff spot (they’re 1 game away) or the NL East (any combination of Phils wins and Braves losses adding up to 5), let’s continue to poke around the edges of that Eagles win on Sunday.

The Michael Vick Experience was on full view. Vick dazzled the Rams by rushing for 98 yards.

After so many years of Donovan McNabb trying desperately to run away from his early reputation as running quarterback, it’s nice to see a Birds’ signal-caller revel in his abilities.

Vick embraces his status as the new Ultimate Weapon, a moniker once dropped on another so-called running quarterback for the Eagles. Maybe you heard of him. Randall Cunningham once adorned the cover of Sports Illustrated after being hailed as the NFL’s new Ultimate Weapon.

But one of his successors, No. 5, hated being lumped in with what he thought was the “stigma” attached to the notion of a running quarterback.

McNabb insisted he was just a quarterback, and chafed every time he was asked about taking advantage of his running talents.

Vick makes no such argument. If anything, Vick might be too reckless with his running. He often declines to run out of bounds or go into a slide, instead often taking on tacklers, putting his health – and the Eagles future – on the line.

Yesterday, the day after torturing the Rams defense, Vick said he felt quicker than at any point in his career, and that he would continue to run as long as his legs feel good.

There really isn’t any way to defense what Vick does on the football field. Even he admitted yesterday he’s not always sure what his body is going to do.

Add in weapons such as DeSean Jackson and LeSean McCoy, and you have what just might be the most explosive offense in football.

Run, Michael, run. But by all means stay healthy.

That will be the challenge Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg face. They must utilize Vick’s unique talents while still keeping him upright. Doing that with two rookies and a lot of new faces on the offensive line is easier said than done.

Right now Vick is the best of both worlds. The Eagles will go as far as his arm – and legs – carry them.
