Pity the Cincinnati Reds.
All they had to do the last two nights was face off with two of the best pitchers in baseball.
They have zero runs to show for their efforts.
Cliff Lee followed Roy Halladay to the hill last night and he picked up right where Halladay left off the night before.
Lee has been sizzling in August, just as he was in June.
After blanking the Reds last night, Lee is now 5-0 with a 0.45 in August. That comes after his red-hot June, where he also was 5-0, but with a 0.21 earned run average.
Lee came up two earned runs in August over 39 and two-thirds innings.
That’s two straight shutouts over the Reds on the backs of Halladay and Lee. Today Vance Worley, only one of the hottest pitchers in baseball, will take the hill in the afternoon tilt as the Phils look for the sweep. They now stand 40 games over .500 at 86-46.
Don’t look for them to have any long losing streaks. Not so long as they can trot out Lee and Halladay.
Come to think of it, Hamels and Worley aren’t exactly chopped liver.
Today is September 1. We’re 30 days from another Red October.
Maybe more than ever before, this Phillies team is “armed” for battle in the playoffs.
And Gen. Lee is leading the charge.
