A tale of two Chesters

Call it the tale of two Chesters.

On Saturday 900 volunteers joined 400 city residents in the 10th annual citywide cleanup.

They attacked weeds, litter, and overgrown lots at 11 sites through the city.

“I think it’s a beautiful thing,” said resident Mary James as she saw a group of volunteers attack waist-high weeds in the empty lot adjacent to her home.

Those who are always complaining that the arrival of Harrah’s Casino & Racetrack has added little to the live of those who live in the city should note that a group of 20 Harrah’s workers was involved in the cleanup. Some of them, who work as valets, came straight from their shifts.

But there remains one blight that even this army of volunteers can’t quell.

A few hours later, early Sunday morning, six people were shot in a parking lot at Ninth and Kerlin.

Police estimate there was a crowd of 75 people outside a takeout restaurant when an argument escalated into gunfire.

Six people suffered gunshot wounds in the ensuing melee.

Police say no one is saying anything.
