The battle for Marcus Hook

The good people of Marcus Hook and the “lower end” of Delaware County have no intention of going down without a fight.

Sure, they got knocked down when Sunoco announced that if they could not find a buyer for their iconic Marcus Hook refinery, they would shut it down.

And they had to pick themselves up off the canvas again just a few weeks later when the folks at ConocoPhillips, across the street in Trainer, basically said they would do the same. It was the equivalent of kicking a man (and a woman) when he was down.

But Marcus Hook is getting up off the floor and fighting back.

Yesterday they held another meeting with officials to plot their strategy in seeking a buyer for the Sunoco refinery.

You can read Kathleen Carey’s coverage of the meeting here.

And if you live in the Chichester School District, brace yourself. Think you don’t have a dog in this fight? Think again. The school district estimates that closing both refineries would leave them looking at a $3.8 million loss. Who do you think is going to make up for that. Correct. The same people who already are paying some of the highest property taxes in the county.

The truth is everyone in Delaware County has a stake in this battle.

And the fight starts now.
