Dredging lives in the lower end

Dredging a way of life in the lower end

A very interesting development that is tied to the possibility of two refineries in the lower end of the county being placed on the market. And that if a buyer can’t be found, Sunoco and ConocoPhillips likely will shut them down.

Remember that $300 million dredging project to deepen the Delaware River?

One of the arguments in favor of spending the money was that if was necessary to handle the barges that roll in and out of those refineries.

But what it if the refineries aren’t there? Sunoco could very well shut down both its South Philly and Marcus Hook facilities. ConocoPhillips is looking to get out of the refining business as well, and that means it will shut down its Trainer facility if no buyer can be found.

It’s just part of the horrendous economic impact that closing the facilities would have on the lower end of the county.

In short, you’re looking at an economic tsunami.

It’s not just the plants, and the 1,000 jobs that depend on them.

That entire region is very much based on an oil economy, and the refining business.

Everybody is looking to get out of the refining business because it doesn’t make as much money as it once did.

Left behind are the workers and shattered lives that have to pick up the pieces. It won’t be easy.

Dredging the Delaware? A lot of people will be looking to dredge their lives if those two plants padlock the doors.
