When he was little, my son loved the movie, ‘The Mighty Ducks.’ I would sit and watch it with him time and again.
It was about a misfit group of kids and their hockey team who are whipped into shape by their coach Emilio Estevez, who is assigned those duties by the court as community service.
There is a line in that movie that has always stuck with me. The opposing coach of the vaunted super team is getting his kids ready to play the Ducks. He exhorts them, “It’s not worth winning if you don’t win big.”
The Union might want to keep that in mind tonight.
For those who don’t know, the Union is our very own Major League Soccer team. They happen to play their games at PPL Park in Chester.
But tonight they will be in Houston, looking to stay alive after dropping the first game in their playoff series against the Dynamo.
Excuse me while I once again show my soccer naivete.
MLS decides these playoff series by the total goals scored. So not only do the Union have to win tonight, they have to win by more than one goal.
That’s because the Dynamo won Game 1, 2-1. If they want to win the series, the Union must win tonight’s game by more than one goal. Should they win by the same score, 2-1, or any one-goal margin, the two teams would not play a Game 3. Instead they would go to overtime. And if that does not decide the contest, they would head for penalty kicks.
Repeat after me, Sons of Ben and other Union fans: It’s not worth winning if you don’t win big!
