A tragic weekend in Delco

It was a particularly gruesome weekend in Delaware County.

It started Friday morning with word that a beloved Sunoco A-Plus market owner had been gunned down.

There has not been an arrest in the murder of Mohammed Fareed.

The vigil for Fareed had barely ended Friday night when we got word of a nasty hit-run on Chester Pike in Glenolden.

A suspect fleeing from police after a traffic stop blew through a red light and slammed into two Delco teenagers.

Academy Park High School students Michael Taylor and Mark McNeill were killed. Taylor was killed instantly in the intersection. McNeill died Saturday at Crozer Chester Medical Center.

A suspect, 19 year-old Maurquis Javon Thompson, fled the scene, abandoned the car not far away in Norwood. He was spotted on a nearby street by a Norwood officer and arrested.

He faces numerous charges, including being under the influence at the time of the crash.

That huge story was followed first thing Sunday morning with news of the loss of beloved Delco native Cardinal John Foley.

Not a good weekend. It was our job to deliver a lot of bad news, and deal with tons of heartbreak.

It goes with the territory. But it doesn't make it any easier.
