Time's yours, Jeffrey

Jeff Lurie just couldn’t help himself.

The Eagles boss does not like to play second fiddle. That’s especially true when it comes to his nemesis across the street, the Phillies.

So you can imagine what kind of mood Lurie was in this weekend as he watched what should have been an epic NFC East tussle between the Eagles and Redskins consigned to afterthought status as the eyes of the sports world – Philly and everywhere else – focused on Citizens Bank Park and the Winter Classic.

So Lurie did about the only thing he could do. The man who brought us the “gold standard” – at least in words if not in deeds – called a press conference.

And what do you know, just in time to try to take some of the luster off the Winter Classic.

This morning, people are not talking about one of the truly great weekends in Philly sports, thanks to the NHL, the Flyers, and that Phillies ballpark turned into the world’s biggest outdoor skating rink.

Instead everyone was wondering what Lurie will say when he stands in front of a bank of microphones at 2:30 this afternooon.

Here’s a clue: Not much.

I do not think Lurie is going to dump Andy Reid. If Reid goes, it will be his decision, not Jeff’s.

Maybe Juan Castillo reassigned. Somebody has to take the fall for the Eagles not making the playoffs and finishing a completely mediocre 8-8.

Lurie could have called this gathering anytime this week. He didn’t. He announced while the Flyers and Rangers were playing.

Like I said, he just can’t help himself.

Maybe Lurie will surprise me. I wouldn’t bet the house on it.

In the words of his longtime coach, Time’s yours, Jeffrey.
