D.A. Jack Whelan and the war on crime

Our thanks to new Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan.

He joined us last night for our live-stream Internet show, ‘Live From the Newsroom.’

If you missed the broadcast, you can catch the replay here.

Whelan talked openly about crime in the county and in particular in several “hot spots,” including the city of Chester.

Whelan will be in Chester this morning for an anti-violence event at White Rock Christian Church, 308 W. Third St.

He’ll be joined by religious leaders from the city and a panel of city administration and law enforcement officials.

It could not come at a better time. Two more people were shot in the city last night.

Whelan noted that one big part of the problem continues to be the anti-snitching mood that dominates too many neighborhoods in the county.

He didn’t have to look far for an example. There’s a Chester murder trial going on in the courthouse this week in which one witness was believed killed, another is missing, and witnesses are plainly afraid for their safety.

That’s the problem with editorializing about people coming forward to tell police what they know. It’s easy for us. It’s a little different when you live in the community.

But it’s still the only answer to the street violence that plagues so many areas of the county.
