More glimmers of hope on the refinery front

There continues to be glimmers of hope on the refinery front.

The latest came Friday during a visit with the editorial board from PUC Chairman Rob Powelson.

He sounded confident that there was a future for the idled ConocoPhillips and Sunoco refineries in Trainer and Marcus Hook.

And he specifically point to the extension granted by Conoco after it had initially indicated it wanted a buyer in place by March 31. Last week they extended that deadline for two months.

Powelson is no stranger to Delaware County, and he knows exactly how much is at stake in the refinery issue.

Powelson grew up here in Delco, attended Wallingford-Swarthmore schools and wound up as a staff assistant to then 7th District Congressman Curt Weldon.

After that he served as president of the Chester County Chamber of Business & Industry.

Powelson is a believer that the Marcellus shale development in Pa. is going to play an incresingly big role, and might also have a part to play in saving the two local refineries.

Taking notes, Gov. Corbett?
