'Precious' problem of stray animals goes on in Delco

It’s happened again.

The SPCA has found another dog in horrific condition.

Meet Precious.

SPCA officials rescued the 3-year-old pit bull terrier mix from a feces-filled basement in Chester.

She weighed only 19 pounds when she was found; she should tip the scales at about 45 pounds. She’s not even strong enough to stand on her own. She’s little more than a bag of bones, many of them protruding from her skinny belly.

And all this comes as word is received that the grand plan for a new animal shelter in the county is dead.

You can read the final details here.

It just costs too much money, with the price tag soaring over $2 million.

A solution for animal control since the Delaware County SPCA moved to get out of the stray animal business has proved elusive.

For now the county will continue to contract with the Chester County SPCA to take in Delco strays.

Right now the county is spending $30,000 a month for the first 120 animals. Additional animals cost another $250. In May those extra fees racked up another $4,000 in bills.

The idea of a new animal shelter is going away. The problem with stray animals in Delaware County is not.
