Yesterday I wrote about the travails of Gov. Tom Corbett and why he found himself in this predicament, despite enjoying Republican control of both the Senate and House.
I wondered why he was having so much trouble “governing.”
Well, things like this don’t help.
Corbett is going to bat for $67 million in tax credit for the oil giant Shell in order to land a crucial gas facility in western Pennsylvania. It’s a big project and will translate into Corbett’s first love – lots of jobs.
But here’s the problem. They’re already getting a break by locating the facility in a Keystone Opportunity Zone. And the wooing is over. Shell is building the plan here in Pa.
So why offer them another big break when you’re cutting so many other areas?
How do you think they’re going to feel in Upper Darby when they hear about this huge gift for Shell at a time when they are losing teachers, cutting curriculum and raising taxes.
A Corbett aide says the measure is being used as part of an effort to recruit other firms to locate here.
Have fun selling that one, Mr. Corbett, when you are holding the line or cutting just about everything else.
