A fight for the streets in Chester

It’s not a new problem.

The way police are trying to deal with it is.

Staff writer Rose Quinn today kicks off a three-part series looking at what is being done to quell street violence in the city of Chester.

You can read it here.

With the start of summer and rising temperatures, city and county officials again are taking steps to crack down on street violence in Chester.

The need was emphasized again this weekend with two fatal shootings in as many days in the city.

Quinn, along with photographer Colin Kerrigan, rode along with Chester top cop Joe Bail to get a feel for what police are up against.

That resulted in the jarring image that is featured on today’s front page.

My guess is we’ll take some heat for running the picture of a woman with her hand covering her eyes as she holds the hand of a young boy as a shooting victim is taken away on a stretcher.

We didn’t select that photo to sensationalize the story. We used it because it sums up what this series is all about. It’s right there in the headline. It’s a “Fight for the Streets.”
