An excruciating loss for Phils

Ah, the perils of being a Phillies fan.

This was one they really could not afford to lose. Staked to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning courtesy of a Ryan Howard grand slam, Vance Worley and the bullpen slowly, painfully frittered it away.

Eventually, the game was placed in the hands of one B.J. Rosenberg in the top of the 10th.

You can pretty much guess what happened next. A 5-5 tie ballgame was suddenly a 9-5, deflating win for the Mets.

You can read Dennis Deitch's gamer story here.

Making the loss even more costly was the fact that the Cardinals also lost, meaning the Phils blew a golden opportunity to seize a full game in the Wild Card race.

The Phils’ chances are a long shot. They need to go something like 27-7 the rest of the way, while the Cardinals lanquish near the .500 mark. The Cards did their part last night, but he Phils collapsed.

Of course, there’s another problem with these flickering Phillies’ playoff hopes They need to scratch their way past four teams to get in. That’s a tall order.

Efforts like last night, when they blew a 4-0 lead, are not going to help.
