End of an era for the Phillies

Isn’t this the way it was supposed to be?

First place vs. last place.

Cliff Lee on the mound.

A rousing, 8-0 thrashing of the Nationals and their young whippersnapper Steven Strassburg by the Phils.

Except nothing was the same last night in the nation’s capital.

Shane Victorino is on his way to Los Angeles.

Hunter Pence is also headed west; he’ll be patrolling rightfield for the San Francisco Giants.

It was the Nats who sit in first place in the NL East, and the Phillies in the basement.

G.M. Ruben Amaro yesterday slammed the door on one of the great eras of Phillies baseball, bringing this summer of our discontent to en early, unsatisfactory close with a fire sale before the trade deadline.

Let the Domonic Brown Era begin.

We have full coverage: Ryan Lawrence talks about the remaining Phillies and who is to blame for this mess.

And columnist Dennis Deitch tries to read between the lines of what Amaro was trying to accomplish.

Farewell, Shane. Or, as you said in your native Hawaiian, ‘Mahalo.’

We’ll never forget that grand slam against CC Sabathia. Or that parade. We don’t get many of those.

See you around, Hunter. We enjoyed your short stay here, including your ‘Let’s Go Eat’ mantra.

We wish both of them the best.

But what we really wish is that this summer had somehow turned out different.

Boys of Bummer? Yeah, sounds about right.
