'Live From the Newsroom' does a little 'Idol' worship

We had a great night at the Media Theatre last night when we took ‘Live From the Newsroom’ on the road to the county seat for the second straight week.

We served as the opening act for the finals of Delco Idol.

If you missed our show, you can see the replay here.

And if you’re wondering who won the competition, you can read of the triumph of the supremely talented Maria Maslin here.

Our thanks to Jesse Cline, artistic director of the Media Theatre, as well as theatre stalwart Roger Ricker for all their help in getting the show set up right smack dab on the Media Theatre stage.

Cline joined us for our opening segment and talked about the growth of Delco Idol over the years, including the introduction of Delco Idol Jr. He noted that both talent competitions are evidence of the abundance of talent in this area. He’ll get no argument from me.

I heard actual evidence when we were offered performances by  two Idol stalwarts last night during our show. Jason Alexander, a Marple Newtown grad who is headed to the University of the Arts this fall, was first up. Jason recently appeared in the lead of the theatre’s production of “Jesus Christ Superstar’ and was a finalist last night.

We also were wowed at the talents of 12-year-old Gianni Palmarini of Aston, whose young voice is a marvel.

Emcee Sue Serio, the popular weather anchor from Fox-29 who serves as emcee for the evening, sat in with us and told is of her ties to the theatre. Sue and her husband, local sports reporter Bill Vargus, who served as a judge for last night’s finals, have appeared on stage together in the two-person show “Love Letters.”

She had a late night with the finals and was back on the set of “Good Day” this morning at 4:25. I know how you feel, Sue.

Finally, we also got a visit from maybe the most important person in the Idol competition. That would be Tom Fosnocht, the brilliant accompanist who plays for each contestant. Remember that includes tryouts for hundreds of Idol hopefuls and the actual competition, which started with 40 contestants.

Once again, our congratulations to all the contestants, and in particular to this year’s Delco Idol winner Maria Maslin.

Don’t forget that the finals of Delco Idol Jr. will be held at the theatre Sunday night.
