As I left the office last night to head for Media and our ‘Live From the Newsroom’ show on State Street, I was confronted with a fairly discomforting sight.
Looking to the east I saw a nasty, black sky that appeared to be rumbling over Philadelphia. It looked like it was going to pour at any moment.
Thankfully, I was headed in the other direction.
A quick glance to the West showed the weather was not nearly as threatening.
In other words, we had a blast last night as ‘Live From the Newsroom’ took in ‘Dining Under the Stars’ in Media.
If you missed the show, you can catch the full replay here.
If you live in Delaware County and have not yet taken in this event, you’re missing one of the region’s true gems of summer.
Now, I happen to love eating al fresco. I eat outside all summer. But they really do it up right in Media. There are literally hundreds of people sitting in the middle of the street outside restaurants up and down State Street.
It’s a great sight. And it’s huge for business on what otherwise might just be another sleep mid-week night in the summer.
We talked to Zubair Khan, head of the Media Business Authority, as well as restaurateurs Loic Barnieu, who owns three eateries in town, and Claudio Sandolo, who has sunk a small fortune into turning the old borough hall into the sparkling new Spasso’s, and they both said business is now booming on Wednesday nights. And you can thank ‘Dining Under the Stars’ for that.
Also stopping by was Media Mayor Bob McMahon and Media Elementery School Principal Maria Kotch. She offered an update on the big move taking place this fall. Media Elementary students and staff are relocating for “up to” a year in what used to be Natvitiy BVM while a huge renovation is done on their project. Classes start the day after Labor Day, something I know that kids have been dying to hear.
Finally, our Media blogger Tedman O’Hara, who pens the AllthingsMediaPa blog, paid us a visit and talked a bit about the big effort by the kids in the Media Little League as well as a very special event our blog team and Community Media Lab will be doing in September with the Delaware County Literacy Council.
Just a great summer night in Media. It’s Dining Under the Stars every Wednesday night. Check it out. Thanks for Zubair Khan for all his help in setting up the show.
And some very special thanks to our Media Correspondent Susan Serbin, who expertly assumed the role of "producer" as she lined up folks to chat with us.
And here’s a special preview. Next Wednesday night we will be the opening act for the finals of the Delco Idol competition at Media Theatre. We’ll be live with some of the young performers as well as officials from Media Theatre. Stay tuned for more details as ‘Live From the Newsroom’ continues its summer road show.
