'Live From the Newsroom' meets 'The Lazarus Project,' dealing with violence in Chester

Of the many people with ideas about how to deal with violence in Chester, easily the most interesting is the case of Ulysses ‘Butch’ Slaughter and Shakiyl Smith.

(p>They will be our guests tonight on our weekly live-stream Internet broadcast, ‘Live From the Newsroom.’

Smith knows a little bit about the gun problem and street violence in Chester. He sits in a wheelchair because of it.

Smith was leaving a party in the city in 2008 when someone opened fire on the car he was riding in. He’s been in a wheelchair ever since.

But Smith, with the help of Chester entrepreneur Slaughter, wants to meet the person who fired that shot. He’s not interested in revenge; he instead is looking to forgive.

He also does not want the person to face any criminal charges.

Slaughter has gone down the same road himself, a tortured path to reconciliation with his father, who gunned down his mother as Slaughter looked on as a child.

Slaughter and Smith have dubbed their efffort “The Lazarus Project.”

We’ll talk about it tonight. Join us at 7 on DelcoTimes.com.
