Maybe the Phillies aren't dead yet after all

Don’t look now, but the baseball season might not be over just yet.

Consider this little nugget. The Phillies now sit 10 games back in the race for those coveted Wild Card spots in the National League. Yes, they are helped immeasurably by the fact that this year, for the first time, two teams will make the Wild Card.

Don’t wait for me to complain.

But here’s the kicker: Despite being eight games under .500 at 54-62, the Phillies actually are closer in the Wild Card race than the Cardinals were at this time last year.

You remember the Cardinals. They beat the Phillies in the NLDS and went on to win the World Series.

Last night the Phils got seven sparkling innings out of Kyle Kendrick as they shut out the Marlins for the second night in a row.

Yes, that Kyle Kendrick.

Check out Ryan Lawrence’s game story to learn the secret that Kendrick is crediting for his turnaround.

All of a sudden, the Phillies vaunted pitching rotation is living up to its reputation. Cole Hamels is on fire, with a 20-inning shutout streak. Roy Halladay will be on the hill this afternoon as the Phils got for a sweep in Florida. He’s been looking more and more like the Halladay we got used to seeing blow teams away.

Maybe, just maybe the Eagles and football season will just have to wait until after Labor Day.
