Nick at Night? Or until Vick falters, or gets hurt

Without question the biggest development in Eagles camp this summer has been the emergence of Nick Foles as a backup to Michael Vick.

Notice I said backup.

I don’t think anyone should be wasting breath debating whether Foles - who has yet to take a snap in a real NFL game - is going to supplant Vick as the Birds’ starter.

That does not mean Foles will not see meaningful time behind center for the green and white this year.

That’s because the biggest question about this team remains the same one that has hung around the neck of No. 7 for most of his career.

Can Michael Vick stay healthy? Is he willing to change his style of play, maybe not push the envelope quite as much. And if he does, will it affect his performance. Is Vick the same player when he’s not playing with his hair on fire.

Then again, if it means he’s not the turnover machine he too often was last year, that would not be a bad thing.

Here’s the bottom line. Michael Vick has taken exactly 12 snaps in two exhibition games this summer. He will not play again before the opener after banging up his thumb and his ribs in the first two practice games. That means his true preseason is likely going to take place in the first few weeks of the regular season.

Couple that with Andy Reid’s notorious penchant for teams that start slow, and you have a concoction just made to order for Iggles fans.

Should Vick struggle early, how long ‘til the ‘We Want Nick’ chants break out at Lincoln Financial Field?

Here’s something I think you can bank on. Nick Foles will play meaningful minutes at QB for the Eagles this year.

Just when that occurs will likely tell you everything you need to know about how successful this season will be.
