Do you believe in miracles?
We’re not talking about the Eagles' Houdini act in pulling a victory from the jaws of defeat in Cleveland on Sunday.
No, we’re talking Phillies.
Don’t look now but the Phils are just five games back in the Wild Card race. Last night they got another strong outing from their new ace, Kyle Kendrick, while the Cardinals fell to the Padres on the West Coast.
OK, take a deep breath. This is still a long shot. For one thing, the Phillies have to scratch and claw their way over four teams, including the Cardinals.
Now comes the really discouraging part. Once they leave San Diego, the Cardinals have nine games against the two teams with the worst records in the majors, the Astros and Cubs.
The Phils might have a better shot of overtaking the Dodgers, who still have series with the Cardinals, Reds and Nationals on their docket.
The Phillies have 21 games left on their schedule. Even Charlie Manuel believes they likely have to win at least 14-15 of those. I think that’s a little low.
But it beats the alternative, which just a couple of weeks ago looked like a month of meaningless baseball.
And after the way the Eagles played on Sunday, it might not be a bad thing to extend this Phillies season as long as we possibly can.
