'Live From the Newsroom' pays a visit to Widener University

We’ll be on the road tonight for a special edition of our ‘Live From the Newsroom’ live-stream community affairs broadcast.

Tonight we’ll pay a visit to one of the true gems of Delaware County.

We’ll be on the campus of Widener University, the guests of university President James Harris. Widener is a very special oasis in what is very often a troubled city. Harris will speak to the civic mission of the university, and its push to play an increasingly big part in the city’s turnaround.

One of the ways the university is doing that is offering a valid choice to parents frustrated with the struggling Chester Upland School District. The Widener Partnership Charter School is often held up as a model for what charter schools can accomplish in downtrodden areas. Paula T. Silver, deah of the School of Human Service Professions and chair of Widener Partnership, will tell us how they are making a difference in the city.

We’ll also be joined by several Widener students, including Anna Miller, a graduate business student who is coordinator for the Presidential Service Corps/Bonner Leaders Program.

Julie Dietrich, director of special projects and initiatives, has been instrumental in coordinating Widener’s interactions with the Strong Cities, Strong Communities team. She’ll talk about that key city program.

Do you have something you’ve always wanted to know about Widener? Why not join the conversation? You can log on to DelcoTimes.com and take part in our live chat, or simply email me your question at editor@delcotimes.com and I will put your question to our panel.

Join us tonight at 7. We’ll be ‘Live From the Newsroom,’ only this time from the campus of Widener University in Chester.
