We’ve all seen them.
Now we’ve heard from them as well.
The Chester Six are sorry.
Six teen girls who recorded the brutal beating of a mentally challenged woman in the city on video and then posted it on the Internet were in court yesterday for their preliminary hearing.
You can read all the details here.
All six will face trial on assault charges in the attack that became an Internet sensation after we posted the video of the assault on our website.
Yesterday the girls were striking a different tone than the laughing pack who seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves as they viciously hit and kicked the woman, and even hit her with a chair.
“I take it back. I’m sorry, said Jamia Davis, 15. “I know I can’t take it back, but everybody makes mistakes.”
Similar sentiments were heard from the other young suspects.
We also heard from someone else yesterday.
We heard from the victim, who took the stand and detailed her ordeal.
“It’s the worst beating I every took in my life anywhere,” she said.
All of her young attackers were held for trial. Bail was reduced for two of the girls. All were loaded back into a sheriff’s van and taken back to Delaware County Prison.
And the victim? She’s now living in a hotel.
What makes this story unique, aside from the craven nature of the assault itself, is the fact that the girls specifically videotaped the attack and then posted it on the Internet.
It is part of who we are today as a society, and what we crave.
It’s a moment of celebrity. It’s a glimpse of your very own reality TV show. It’s a chance to be a star.
And it’s unbelievably sad.
