A valiant effort from Sheamus Bonner

I knew the first moment I met him that I was going to like Sheamus Bonner.

That didn’t change yesterday.

Bonner is the Democrat who challenged one of the GOP institutions in this county. He took on longtime Republican state Rep. Nick Micozzie for the 163rd House seat.

Bonner did not win this newspaper’s endorsement. He did win our respect. He did so with his common-man approach to the key issues, his concern for organized labor, and his passion for protecting middle-class families.

Bonner did not win a very close race. But something he did yesterday makes him a winner in every sense of the word.

The race was very close, testament in itself to how good a campaign Bonner ran. In short, he gave the veteran Micozzie all he wanted and more. With a difference of about 354 votes, the race would come down to the provisional and absentee ballots. The full story is here.

As the counting continued in Media yesterday, it became obvious that Bonner would not be able to overcome Micozzie’s lead.

That’s when he did something very special. Bonner conceded.

But that’s not all. Bonner also did something else. He called Nick, congratulated him, and did one other thing as well. He “pledged to support him by any means for his constituents.” Remember when working for the common good used to be the norm in politics?

Class act.

I hope Bonner stays active in Democratic politics.

You know, it’s been a lifetime since a Democrat was elected to County Council.

Delco could do a lot worse than Sheamus Bonner.
