There is more at stake than the White House in Tuesday’s election.
We also will electe a United States senator, as well as members of the Pennsylvania Legislature.
Oh, and one other race.
Delaware County also will elect a Congressman. For most of the county, that means the 7th District. A sliver of the county hugging the Delaware River falls under the domain of the 1st District and Democratic Rep. Bob Brady.
But most of the county is represented in D.C. by fresman Congressman Pat Meehan of Drexel Hill.
Two years ago, this race was a barnburner. That’s because Joe Sestak, who showed Curt Weldon the door after a 20-year run in Congress, decided he had bigger fish to fry. Sestak stunned his Democratic Party elders - including Ed Rendell and Joe Biden - by ignoring pleas to step aside when veteran Sen. Arlen Specter switched parties. Instead Sestak took on the machine - and the senator - and beat them both.
That left the 7th District Congress seat up for grabs. Democrat Bryan Lentz, who knocked Tom Gannon out of his longtime post in the Legislature in the 161st District, faced off against Meehan, the former Delco D.A. and U.S attorney. Meehan won.
This time around the 7th district race doesn’t have nearly the sizzle it did two years ago, despite the best efforts of Radnor attorney George Badey to stir things up. Badey has based much of his campaign focusing on Meehan’s votes in favor of the controversial budget plan put forth by now GOP VP candidate Paul Ryan.
Today Badey will get the chance to go one-on-one with Meehan. The one and only debate between the two men takes place this afternoon.
