How far the Eagles have fallen

Anyone remember the Dallas Cowboys?

Anyone remember when Dallas week gripped the Philadelphia region in a very special kind of sports fever?

Anyone remember when a prime-time matchup with the hated America’s Team and those helmets with the Stars would send us into bouts of frothing passion.

Yeah, neither do I.

This week is really all Eagles owner Jeff Lurie needs to see to determine just how far off the radar the Eagles have fallen.

We’re talking about who should play centerfield for the Phillies. Not who will serve Tony Romo his lunch. Not the sight of Jerry Jones wincing as the Eagles pummel the ‘Boys. Not how much we hate his billion dollar playpen, that gaudy new stadium in Dallas.

Nobody cares. The Eagles are 3-8 and going nowhere. The quarterback of the future is just that, still somewhere in the future. The coach is playing out the string. So is his team.

The next meaningful thing this team does will happen when Lurie steps up to a bank of microphones and says the following words: “The Philadelphia Eagles have parted ways with Andy Reid after 14 seasons.”

Until then, nothing about this team really matters. I guess we can talk about who should be the next coach. Word now is that Monte Kiffin is going to leave his son’s program at USC. There are those who would like to see him run the Eagles defense under John Gruden. Or maybe the latest college hot shot, Chip Kelly of Oregon. Me? I’m still holding out for Bill O’Brien after the job he did this year at Penn State. Who knew they actually had kids in Happy Valley who could play quarterback?

The Eagles have two more home games this year, Dec. 13 vs. the Bengals (a Thursday night game) and Dec. 23 against the Redskins.

I’d like nothing more than to see Lincoln Financial Field look like a vast expanse of empty seats for those two games.

We aren’t fools, Mr. Lurie. We’re fans. We live and die with this team. This year we just died, mostly at the hands of Andy Reid and the series of decisions surrounding this team over the last couple of years.

Call us when someone else is running the show.

Hey, how ‘bout that Michael Bourn!
